Phonics & Early Reading
Our scheme that we follow is called ‘Monster Phonics’. We do daily phonics sessions and build on these skills within our reading and writing sessions.
All children in year 1 are to take part in the national phonics screening check in June. It is a short assessment and it tests them on their ability to read and decode a series of words. It allows us to see what progress is being made and if children are on track with their phonics skills, in order for them to be fluent readers.
Children bring home a reading book every Wednesday, this should be read at home and brought back to school on Friday. All of the reading books link to our Monster Phonics scheme and the children really enjoy the stories!
Spelling
Spelling is taught during our phonics and guided reading sessions. By the end of the year children are expected to read and write the year one common exception words.
PE
Our PE days are currently Monday and Wednesday and children should come to school dressed in their PE kits on these days. Please remove earrings.
We are enjoying dance and gymnastics this half term.
Homework
Year 1 are encouraged to read at home twice a week following their guided reading sessions.
We also have numbots, children have their own login and can access this at home.
