Is My Child Too Ill For School?

It can be tricky deciding whether or not to keep your child off school or nursery when they are unwell.

If you do keep your child at home, it’s important to phone us on the first day of their absence, as per our Attendance & Absence Procedures.

Please follow the link below to the NHS website for guidance. These say when children should be kept off school and when they shouldn’t.

E-School Nurse Service

In order to provide health support and advice for children in Cumbria, the school nurse service is launching an easy to access online E-School Nurse Service.

Instead of being face to face, you will talk to the nurse over a live video link that is private and secure.

The nurse, in consultation with you will assess the child’s health problems and provide you with support and advice.

If you would like more information about this service please follow the link below, or to book an appointment telephone: 0300 3034 365. You can also find an information leaflet in the Key Documents section at the bottom of this page.

Head Lice

Head lice are tiny insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. An infestation of head lice most often affects children and usually results from the direct transfer of lice from the hair of one person to the hair of another.

A head-lice infestation isn’t a sign of poor personal hygiene or an unclean living environment. Head lice don’t carry bacterial or viral infectious diseases.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications are available to treat head lice. Follow treatment instructions carefully to rid your scalp and hair of lice and their eggs.

A number of home or natural remedies are also used to treat head-lice infestations, but there is little to no clinical evidence of their effectiveness.

Please ensure that you treat ALL the family in the event of headlice infestation.

There is a helpful NHS Head Lice leaflet in the Key Documents section at the bottom of this page, and a couple of useful websites as follows:
