Phonics & Early Reading
Our scheme that we follow is called ‘Monster Phonics’. We do daily phonics sessions and build on these skills within our reading and writing sessions.
All children in year 1 are to take part in the national phonics screening check in June. It is a short assessment and it tests them on their ability to read and decode a series of words. It allows us to see what progress is being made and if children are on track with their phonics skills, in order for them to be fluent readers.
Children bring home a reading book every Wednesday, this should be read at home and brought back to school on Friday. All of the reading books link to our Monster Phonics scheme and the children really enjoy the stories!
Spelling
Spelling is taught during our phonics and guided reading sessions. By the end of the year children are expected to read and write the year one common exception words.
PE
Our PE day is currently Monday and children should come to school dressed in their PE kits on this day.
What Are We Learning About?
Spring Term 2025
Please find some information below about the different things that we will be learning in Year 1 this term!
English
In English we are reading the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s Outing’. This is a really fun, repetitive story that tells the tale of what happens to Mr Gumpy on his day out. As well as exploring the story, we will be writing a diary from Mr Gumpy’s perspective and we will be writng our own version of the story.
Maths
In Maths we are looking at place value of numbers to 20 as well as addition and subtraction within 20. Later in the term we will look at place value within 50, length and height and mass and volume. Remember that your child has a login for Numbots which they can use at home to practise their arithmetic skills.
Geography
In Geography our topic is ‘Bright Lights Big City’. The main focus of this is learning all about London but we are also looking at the United Kingdom and the four countries that make up the UK and their capital cities. We will also be learning about physical features of the United Kingdom and compass directions North, South, East and West.
